First Friend, Forever Loved: Paddy’s Place in Ollie’s Story
Paddy was a black Cocker Spaniel whose presence filled our lives with love, laughter, and joy. He wasn’t just a pet; he was part of our family. Paddy was my childhood dog, and he taught me early on that not every dog dreams of long walks; some just prefer a cosy bed and a snuggle, especially when it’s raining.
Paddy was loved by many, including Ollie and his little sister Tiggy. Though he wasn’t exactly thrilled about either of them at first (too much energy, too many sniffy greetings), they quickly became part of his world. Paddy had a way of tolerating their chaos with quiet grace, and over time, they adored him just as much as he quietly accepted them.
Paddy was Ollie's best friend, although Ollie may not have been his. When Ollie came bounding into his life, full of energy, enthusiasm, and absolutely no concept of personal space, Paddy wasn’t quite sure what to make of him. Ollie was a whirlwind, and Paddy was not, but over time the friendship grew. Paddy didn’t just tolerate Ollie; he grew to love him. And Ollie? He absolutely adored Paddy. His ears would perk up, and he would get excited when his name was mentioned. Every time they were reunited, Ollie would try to get as close as physically possible, even if that meant lying directly on top of Paddy, who, to be clear, did not appreciate this particular gesture of affection. Paddy would give a sigh or a growl, and more often than not, he’d put up with Ollie’s relentless sniffing and nudging.
And then came whirlwind number two, Tiggy! Just as Paddy had finally adjusted to Ollie’s antics, along came another bundle of energy. Let’s just say he wasn’t exactly thrilled to start the process all over again, but once again, he accepted her in his own quiet way. He'd sit back and watch her bounce off the furniture like he once did.
We recently lost Paddy, and it hurts in ways I didn’t expect. But he filled our lives with so much love, it’s impossible not to smile through the tears. He gave us ten beautiful years of tail wags, muddy walks, and moments that stitched themselves into our lives. He gave Ollie three and a half years, but that was more than enough to build the friendship that had blossomed over the years.
Although Paddy didn’t get to see the official launch, he was still part of the journey. Paddy wasn't muzzled, but that didn't stop him from wanting to give the toy a try. He gave the toy a couple of enthusiastic chases, but that was plenty in his old age. After that, he decided it might be better suited as a chew toy, though for the record, it’s not designed for chewing!
Paddy, you didn’t ask for much. You just stayed close, gave love, and held space for all of us. Now that you’re gone, the house feels different, but your presence hasn’t faded. You’re not missing. You’re everywhere.
Forever part of our family.
Paddy
